Technician/engineering apprenticeships are aimed at school leavers or career changers, where it is an alternative to university. Level 2 and 3 are aimed at school leavers or people who do not have A-levels. Level 4 and higher are aimed at people who have A-levels or those who have lower level apprenticeships in engineering. There is a wide variety of engineering apprenticeships available for every type of engineering type (automotive, technology, aerospace, FMCG, etc...). Engineering apprenticeships prepare you for operator/technician roles, more technical roles are normally suited to those who have university degrees.

Type of apprenticeships

Various engineering apprenticeships will differ form each other due to the nature of the work. However, all engineering apprenticeships will combine part-time studying with full-time employment. The studying schedule will vary from apprenticeship to apprenticeship, where you may be studying once or twice a week or have a scheduled block (week or two) periodically.

Entry Requirements

Level 2: You will also need to be at least 16 years old and living in the country you are applying.

Level 3: You will need to be at least 16 years old, living in the country and have at least level 2 qualifications.

Level 4/5: You will need to be at least 16 years old, living in the country and have a level 3 qualification in the sector you are applying too or equivalent (i.e. A-levels).

Level 6/7: You will need to be at least 16 years old, living in the country and have a level 4/5 qualification in the sector you are applying too or equivalent (i.e. A-levels, note the grade requirements will be higher than level 4/5 entry).

The salary you will earn during the apprenticeship will usually be minimum wage. Minimum wage is £4.30 from ages 16-18 years, £6.56 from ages 18-20 years and £8.36 for ages 21 and over. There is also a national living wage at £8.91 for ages 23 and over. Depending on the level and company you do your apprenticeship with the salary you get will vary, where some will pay more than minimum wage. Furthermore, as you progress through the apprenticeship course your salary will go up year by year.
