About Transport

Transport apprenticeships focus on infrastructure and encompasses a range of sectors from railways to IT solutions to civil engineering. Transport apprenticeship does not only mean public transport, it will also include commercial transport such as ships, lorries, trains, taxis and airplanes. Furthermore, it will involve the operating and maintenance of the machines as well as the management of the supply chain and customers.

Type of apprenticeships

Transport apprenticeships start from level 3 and go up to level 6. You can either apply to the business, engineering or technology side.

Business (level 3 to 6) - This will involve jobs such as Project management, Human resources, Project controls, transport planning etc.

Engineering (level 3 to 6) - This will involve jobs such as London underground engineer, railway engineer, highway engineer, civil engineering etc.

Technology (level 3 to 4) - This will involve jobs such as Software developer, Business analysis, Systems operator etc.

Entry Requirements

Level 3: You will need to be at least 16 years old, living in the country and have at least 5 GCSE at grades A*-C (9-4) including math and english.

Level 4/5: You will need to be at least 16 years old, living in the country and have a level 3 qualification in the sector you are applying too or equivalent (i.e. A-levels).

Level 6/7: You will need to be at least 16 years old, living in the country and have a level 4/5 qualification in the sector you are applying too or equivalent (i.e. A-levels, note the grade requirements will be higher than level 4/5 entry).

Work hours and Salary

As a transport student or graduate you will usually work 37.5 - 40 hours per week. The salary you can expect can be seen below, note that if you work in commercial companies or private companies you may see hire salaries depending on the company that hires you, public sector roles usually will pay less than private or commercial roles.
